Self-Managed vs Plan-Managed vs NDIA-Managed: What's the Difference?

Get this decision right, and everything else about your NDIS plan gets easier. How you manage your NDIS disability support shapes which providers you can choose, how much admin lands on your plate, and how much say you actually have over your own funding. Get it wrong, and you could end up stuck with less choice than you're entitled to, or more paperwork than you ever wanted.
Here's how the three options actually stack up.
NDIA-Managed
With an NDIA-managed plan, the National Disability Insurance Agency handles the payments directly. You choose supports and services, but you can only use providers registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, which narrows your search if you're looking for NDIS disability services in Melbourne specifically.
This is the lowest-admin option. There's no need to keep invoices, submit claims, or manage a budget yourself, the NDIA takes care of the paperwork. The trade-off is less flexibility, since unregistered providers aren't an option under this arrangement.
Plan-Managed
A plan-managed arrangement brings in a separate plan manager, funded by the NDIS at no cost to you, who handles the financial side of your plan. You still choose your providers and services, and you can use both registered and unregistered providers, which opens up a wider range of options.
The plan manager pays invoices on your behalf and keeps track of your budget, so you get some of the flexibility of self-management without taking on all the bookkeeping. For a lot of participants, this ends up being the middle ground that works best: broader provider choice, but with someone else handling the admin.
Self-Managed
With a self-managed plan, you're in full control. You choose any provider you like, registered or not, negotiate your own rates, and handle the payments and record-keeping yourself.
This option gives you the most freedom, but it also comes with the most responsibility. You'll need to keep receipts, submit claims to the NDIA, and manage your budget so it lasts the length of your plan. Some participants manage this themselves, while others share the load with a family member or support coordinator.
You can also mix and match
It's worth knowing that plans don't have to be all one type. Many participants use a mix, for example, self-managing their
daily living and life skills development while having a plan manager handle their NDIS disability support and other supports. This can be a good way to keep flexibility where it matters most to you, without taking on more admin than you actually want.
Which one is right for you?
There's no universally correct answer. It comes down to how much admin you want to take on, how much provider flexibility matters to you, and whether you've got support from family or a coordinator to help manage things. If you're unsure, it's worth raising it directly with your Local Area Coordinator or planner during your planning meeting.
