What is the NDIS?

The NDIS is here to help you live more freely, every day.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding for Australians living with a permanent or significant disability. It helps participants build independence, improve quality of life, and access the disability care services they need to reach their goals.

The NDIS puts you in control. You choose who provides your care, how it's delivered, and when it works best for you.

Through the NDIS, you may be able to access:

  • Help with daily living tasks and personal care
  • Supported accommodation and independent living options
  • Community participation and social activities
  • Transport assistance
  • Therapy and skill-building supports

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the NDIS and how can it help me?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a federal government scheme that changed the way disability support works in Australia. It helps people with a permanent and significant disability to live independently, build skills, and take part in their communities.

The NDIS gives you genuine choice and control. You decide who provides your care, how it's delivered, and when it suits your lifestyle. You can access supports that match your goals, preferences, and daily routines.

Through your NDIS plan, you can access daily living assistance, personal care, community activities, therapy services, assistive technology, and accommodation options. Some participants also choose support coordination to help navigate their plan.

NDIS funding is organised into three main budget categories: Core, Capacity Building, and Capital. Each category covers different types of support, from everyday assistance through to longer-term skill development and equipment or home modifications.

The NDIS is designed to support you for life, adapting as your needs and goals change. Australian Instant Care helps Geelong participants get the most from their funding through flexible, compassionate care.

  • Am I eligible for NDIS support?

To access the NDIS, you must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident under 65 years of age. Eligibility depends on specific conditions set by the NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency). The process begins when you register with the NDIA and are assessed as eligible based on your disability and support needs. If you're unsure, a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) can help with your application and connect you with the right support.

  • What types of support can I access through my NDIS plan?

Your NDIS plan can cover a wide range of supports. A good provider will work with you to access services that match your goals and circumstances, whether your needs are complex or specific.

    NDIS funding can cover:

    • Daily activities support — assistance with personal care tasks including bathing, dressing, grooming, household tasks, and everyday routines that help you maintain your independence
    • Daily living skills development — structured programs focused on building abilities in cooking, budgeting, communication, and other practical skills for independent living
    • Therapy services — physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech pathology, along with other allied health professionals who support your independence and wellbeing
    • Assistive technology — wheelchairs, hearing aids, communication devices, and other equipment
    • Transportation support — helping you travel to places that aren't otherwise accessible
    • Community participation — sports, events, and social activities that keep you connected with friends and build meaningful relationships within your community
    • Home modifications — changes that improve safety and accessibility in your home
    • Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) — purpose-built housing designed specifically for people with extreme functional impairment who require a high level of support in their living environment
    • Community nursing care — medical support and assistance for participants who need moderate to intensive care in their home or community setting
    • Support for families — including respite care so primary carers can take a necessary break
    • Employment support — finding and maintaining work that suits your skills and interests

At Australian Instant Care, we focus on daily living support and community participation. We don't offer every service listed above, but we'll help you understand what your plan makes possible and point you toward the right providers where needed.

  • What personal care services can I access through the NDIS?

Personal care is one of the most commonly funded supports under the NDIS. It covers hands-on assistance with everyday tasks like bathing, dressing, grooming, and meal preparation. These supports are delivered by trained support workers who work around your routine and preferences. When choosing a provider, it's worth asking how their support workers are matched to participants, as consistency and familiarity can make a real difference to your comfort and confidence. If personal care is part of your NDIS plan, we can help you understand what's covered and connect you with the right support.

  • How is my NDIS plan managed?

There are three main ways your NDIS plan can be managed. You can opt for full agency management, where the NDIA handles payments on your behalf. You can choose shared management, which splits responsibilities between you and the NDIA. Or you can self-manage, giving you the most direct control over your funding and providers.

If you include plan management in your NDIS plan, it comes at no out-of-pocket cost to you. The NDIA allocates additional funding for this under the Improved Life Choices category, so it doesn't come out of your other supports budget.

  • How do I apply for NDIS support?

You can submit an Access Request through the My NDIS portal. Local Area Coordinators (LACs) are also available to guide you through the application process.

  • Why should I use a registered NDIS provider?

Registered NDIS providers are required to meet strict quality and safety standards set by the NDIS Commission. This means the support you receive has been independently assessed and must comply with the NDIS Practice Standards, giving you an added layer of protection and accountability.

Choosing a registered provider also means your supports are developed with your specific needs and goals in mind. The aim is to strengthen your autonomy and improve your quality of life, not just tick boxes.

Australian Instant Care is a registered NDIS provider. We go through the same compliance requirements as any registered provider, which means you can have confidence in the standard of care you receive, regardless of where you're located.

  • What makes Australian Instant Care different from other NDIS providers?

We take a genuinely personal approach to disability support services, providing personalised support that's built around you. We don't simply match you with services. We match you with people who care.

Our support workers are selected for their empathy as much as their experience. That means you work with familiar faces who take the time to learn your preferences, routines, and goals. We communicate openly, stay flexible, and provide consistent support you can rely on. That approach stays the same whether you're in Melbourne or reaching out to us from Geelong.

  • How do I get started with Australian Instant Care?

Getting started is straightforward. We work with all NDIS plan types, whether you're self-managed, plan managed, or NDIA-managed.

Call us on 1300 296 250 or contact us through our website to speak with our team directly. We'll get back to you promptly to talk through your needs, answer your questions, and explain how our services can help.

From there, we'll work with you to match the right support workers and services to your lifestyle. No pressure, just clear, helpful guidance.

  • Can my NDIS support change over time?

Absolutely. Life changes, and so can your supports. We offer flexible schedules and adaptable services so you always have the right kind of help when you need it. Over the course of your NDIS journey, your circumstances and goals may evolve, and we adjust right alongside you.

  • Do you provide disability services in Geelong?

Yes. We support NDIS participants across Geelong and the surrounding region. We're here to help you access support that fits your life, wherever you are.

Geelong has a large and active NDIS community, with over 21,000 participants currently accessing support across the region. There is a wide range of registered providers operating in the area, covering everything from daily care through to specialised housing. We're proud to be part of that support network, even as a provider based elsewhere.

  • What resources are available to help me understand my NDIS plan?

We provide clear guidance to help you navigate your plan with confidence. Our team can walk you through your funding categories, connect you with Local Area Coordinators, and point you to tools like the My NDIS portal. We want the NDIS to feel manageable, so you can stay focused on your goals.

Let's make every day a little easier, together.

Whether you're looking for support services for yourself, a family member, or someone you care about, our team is ready to help. We take the time to understand what matters most and provide care that fits real lives.
